News Recap [March 12-April 2, 2009]
April 2nd, 2009
Tutor Treat Day! Tutees had a pleasant surprise when they walked into tutoring on Thursday afternoon. Awaiting them in the media center were the tutors…with all sorts of scrumptious snacks they brought for their tutees! Don’t worry, tutors got something too–121Reach officers made treats for everyone else! Looking around the room, it seemed that everyone was enjoying their snacks while learning and working together. I think everyone can agree that food makes life better
This great event should be a first-Thursday-of-the-month tradition!
March 12th, 2009
Day One The turnout of students on the first day of 121Reach was a lot more than expected–47 students–and even more have signed up since then (now we have about 70 students who participate in the program). After months of planning and stressful weeks of trying to put everything together–permission slips, web-designing, application forms, etc, etc, and etc–everything just fell together beautifully, like the last pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
The 121Reach Officers would like to give a HUGE “thank you” to Ms. White and Ms. Sheppard for chaperoning after school and for copying and distributing all of our fliers and permission forms throughout the school, to Ms. White for giving us permission to use the Taylor Road Media Center, and to Mr. Folkins for his encouragement and for helping us get in touch with Ms. White. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
We’d also like to thank the 121Reach tutors for volunteering their time and energy. As a fellow high schooler, I can attest that life is really stressful. Thank you so much you guys for coming in after 7+ hours of school and still being passionate and caring and excited to teach and learn. :]
It just amazed me, on this first day, the soft chatter that filled the media center wall-to-wall. As I walked around the room, I observed how each pair worked together. Upon introducing themselves, some tutors and tutees exchanged jokes, others shared interests, and still others began to work right away. Everyone had a different style of working together (something that really fascinates me), but all were earnestly teaching and learning.
The high school students told me that they were really impressed and encouraged by the middle schoolers’ maturity and eagerness to learn, which is phenomenal (and also evident in how engaged everyone was as I walked around the room.)
In the future, we hope that tutors and tutees will continue to develop their friendship, and that as the tutees transition into high school, they face even their toughest classes with a new confidence, determination, and passion.
